Spear and shield were the most commonly used weapon combination on the battlefield from antiquity through the High Middle Ages. The first day of the weekend will be a classic full-day workshop led by Martin Höppner of Schildwache Potsdam. On the second day, we will (unfortunately without Martin) continue with partner exercises together, then move on to sparring games before dedicating the final hours mainly to free sparring and exchange. More information and registration can be found here: https://eveeno.com/speerundschild Equipment: Required: fencing mask, gorget, padded gloves, groin protection (for men) Recommended: fencing jacket, plastron, reinforced gloves, arm guards, knee/elbow protection. Spear simulators and shields needed for the seminar will be provided. However, if you own your own, we would appreciate it if you could bring them along (this saves us quite a bit of work). If this is the case, please indicate it when registering so we know how many we need to provide for the weekend.

Basic athletic ability is one of the key building blocks that can significantly improve your performance in sparring. In our regular classes, athletic training rarely takes place explicitly, since no partners are needed for it and the valuable time in the hall is usually reserved for technique and tactics. Tobias will explain which type of athletic training best supports historical fencing and will also address your individual questions. Berlin-Pankow, September 4, 2025 – Sword fighting like in the old days. That’s what the Berlin-based HEMA club Twerchhau e.V. is now also offering in Pankow. HEMA stands for Historical European Martial Arts – the reconstruction of historical fencing techniques, practiced today with modern protective gear. HEMA covers a variety of historical weapon types – in Pankow, the focus is on the sabre. Starting September 10, the club will be offering sabre training every Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in the gym of the Max-Delbrück-Gymnasium, Dietzgenstr. 47 in Pankow-Niederschönhausen. This finally gives the club the space it needs for its steadily growing number of members. “We are overjoyed to now have a location in Pankow and would especially like to thank the district’s School and Sports Office for their excellent cooperation and support,” says Bjarne Kortmann, the club’s chairman. In many places, HEMA is growing faster than Olympic fencing. Twerchhau e.V. has long been one of the largest fencing clubs in Berlin and also organizes the international Berlin HEMA Cup (next event in March 2026). The new hall not only provides more training opportunities but also makes it possible to host workshops, tournaments, and international gatherings. This strengthens both the sporting and cultural landscape of the district and of Berlin as a whole.

On the weekend of May 24–25, 2025, Berlin hosted the 23rd edition of the Berlin Buckler Bouts (BBB). This international gathering has long become a staple of the Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) scene, attracting fencers from across Europe, North America, and beyond.

The Berlin Messer Weekend 2025 (BMW 2025) was the first major event in Berlin dedicated exclusively to the Long Messer. In the European HEMA scene (Historical European Martial Arts), this weapon holds a special historical significance — and over the past five years, the international community of HEMA fencers has grown noticeably. With the Berlin Messer Weekend, a clear message was sent: the Long Messer deserves its own specialized event. Focus on the Messer The goal of the weekend was to bring together enough Messer fencers from this still relatively small niche to make an event possible that focused exclusively on this weapon type. All parts of the program — from the tournament to the workshops — were held in English to ensure the best possible experience for international participants.

On the first weekend of March 2025, the very first Berlin HEMA Cup took place. Over 150 participants from 23 countries came to Berlin to compete across two days in longsword, saber, and rapier & dagger tournaments — each held in both Open and Women+ categories. The Berlin HEMA Cup was a joint project by Schildwache Potsdam , OSC Berlin , and Twerchhau Berlin. The goal was to organize a well-run tournament while also strengthening HEMA as a sport, hobby, and community in Berlin — and to make it even more appealing to newcomers and spectators.
