Berlin Buckler Bouts in May 2025 – 23rd Edition
On the weekend of May 24–25, 2025, Berlin hosted the 23rd edition of the Berlin Buckler Bouts (BBB). This international gathering has long become a staple of the Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) scene, attracting fencers from across Europe, North America, and beyond.
The Focus: Sword and Buckler
The BBB are dedicated exclusively to fencing with **sword and buckler**, a historical weapon combination best known from the so-called **I.33** — the oldest known fencing manual in Europe, dating back to the early 14th century. The aim is to apply and further develop the principles described in this source in a practical and dynamic way.
Free Sparring Instead of Competition
Unlike many other events, the Berlin Buckler Bouts do not focus on competition. Instead, the emphasis is deliberately placed on free sparring, technical work, and high-level peer exchange. Participants are required to have at least one year of experience with sword and buckler to ensure intensive and cooperative training.
This format fosters an open and respectful atmosphere where historical sources and modern fencing go hand in hand. It’s not only about hard training — but also about discussion, analysis, and mutual learning.
International Exchange and Networking
The Berlin Buckler Bouts are known for their distinctly international atmosphere. Fencers regularly travel from Italy, France, Poland, the UK, the USA, and Canada to attend. Twice a year, Berlin becomes a meeting point for a global community — one that connects historical fencing across clubs, countries, and cultures.
Part of a Long-Standing Tradition
The BBB have been held in Berlin for over a decade, usually twice a year in spring and autumn. This makes them one of the most established regular buckler events worldwide. The combination of a relaxed atmosphere, solid historical foundations, and technically demanding free sparring makes the event a must-attend fixture in the HEMA calendar for many.

Spear and shield were the most commonly used weapon combination on the battlefield from antiquity through the High Middle Ages. The first day of the weekend will be a classic full-day workshop led by Martin Höppner of Schildwache Potsdam. On the second day, we will (unfortunately without Martin) continue with partner exercises together, then move on to sparring games before dedicating the final hours mainly to free sparring and exchange. Spear simulators and shields needed for the seminar will be provided. However, if you own your own, we would appreciate it if you could bring them along (this saves us quite a bit of work). If this is the case, please indicate it when registering so we know how many we need to provide for the weekend.
Speer und Schild ist von der Antike bis ins hohe Mittelalter die meistverwendete Waffenkombinationen auf dem Schlachtfeld. Der erste Tag des Wochenendes wird ein klassischer Tages-Workshop, geleitet durch Martin Höppner der Schildwache Potsdam. Den zweiten Tag werden wir (leider ohne Martin) weiter gemeinsam Partnerübungen durchführen, dann zu Sparringsspielen übergehen, bevor die letzten Stunden vor allem dem freien Sparring und Austausch gewidmet werden. Solltet ihr eigene besitzen, würde es uns aber freuen, wenn ihr diese mitbringt (damit nehmt ihr uns einiges an Arbeit ab). Basic athletic ability is one of the key building blocks that can significantly improve your performance in sparring. In our regular classes, athletic training rarely takes place explicitly, since no partners are needed for it and the valuable time in the hall is usually reserved for technique and tactics. Die eigene Grundathletik ist einer der großen Bausteine, die eure Performance im Sparring maßgeblich voranbringen können. In unseren Kursen findet Athletiktraining selten explizit statt, da hierzu keine Partner benötigt werden und die wertvolle Zeit in der Halle daher eher für Technik und Taktik genutzt wird. On Saturday, August 23rd, the Twerchhau Summer Festival took place – with a diverse program of free fencing, exciting workshops, and a sociable evening gathering at the Berliner Berg Brewery.
Am Samstag, den 23. August, fand das Twerchhau Sommerfest statt – mit einem abwechslungsreichen Programm aus freiem Fechten, spannenden Workshops und einer geselligen Abendveranstaltung in der Berliner Berg Brauerei.
Berlin-Pankow, September 4, 2025 – Sword fighting like in the old days. That’s what the Berlin-based HEMA club Twerchhau e.V. is now also offering in Pankow. HEMA stands for Historical European Martial Arts – the reconstruction of historical fencing techniques, practiced today with modern protective gear. HEMA covers a variety of historical weapon types – in Pankow, the focus is on the sabre. Starting September 10, the club will be offering sabre training every Wednesday at 8:30 p.m. in the gym of the Max-Delbrück-Gymnasium, Dietzgenstr. 47 in Pankow-Niederschönhausen. This finally gives the club the space it needs for its steadily growing number of members. “We are overjoyed to now have a location in Pankow and would especially like to thank the district’s School and Sports Office for their excellent cooperation and support,” says Bjarne Kortmann, the club’s chairman. In many places, HEMA is growing faster than Olympic fencing. Twerchhau e.V. has long been one of the largest fencing clubs in Berlin and also organizes the international Berlin HEMA Cup (next event in March 2026). The new hall not only provides more training opportunities but also makes it possible to host workshops, tournaments, and international gatherings. This strengthens both the sporting and cultural landscape of the district and of Berlin as a whole.
Berlin-Pankow, 04. September 2025 – Schwertkampf wie in alten Zeiten. Das bietet der Berliner HEMA-Verein Twerchhau e.V. ab sofort auch in Pankow an. HEMA steht für ‚Historical European Martial Arts‘ - Historische Europäische Kampfkünste. Es rekonstruiert historische Fechttechniken, die heute mit moderner Schutzausrüstung sicher ausgeübt werden. HEMA umfasst verschiedene historische Waffenarten – in Pankow liegt der Fokus auf dem Säbel. Ab dem 10. September bietet der Verein jeden Mittwoch um 20:30 Uhr Säbeltraining in der Sporthalle des Max-Delbrück-Gymnasiums, Dietzgenstr. 47 in Pankow-Niederschönhausen an. Damit erhält der Verein endlich den Platz, den er für die stetig wachsende Zahl an Mitgliedern benötigt. „Wir sind überglücklich, dass wir nun auch einen Standort in Pankow haben und danken besonders dem Schul- und Sportamt des Bezirksamts Pankow für die tolle Zusammenarbeit und Hilfe“, sagt Bjarne Kortmann, Vorsitzender des Vereins. HEMA wächst vielerorts schneller als das olympische Fechten. Twerchhau e.V. gehört längst zu den größten Fechtvereinen Berlins und richtet u. a. den internationalen Berlin HEMA Cup aus (nächstes Mal im März 2026). Die neue Halle eröffnet dem Verein nicht nur mehr Trainingszeiten, sondern auch die Möglichkeit, Workshops, Turniere und internationale Begegnungen auszurichten. Damit stärkt der Verein die Sport- und Kulturlandschaft im Bezirk und ganz Berlin.
